Status: Permanent Full-Time
Reporting to: Mental Wellness Team Lead, Líl̓wat Health & Healing
Líl̓wat Nation also known as Mount Currie is a large community of approximately 2000 members situated a half hour drive north of Whistler and a two hour drive north of Vancouver. The Addictions Outreach Counsellor is a Counsellor who is familiar with the symptoms of alcoholism and drug abuse. He/she is available to those community members who would like to pursue treatment of their abuses. This is an outpatient program and referrals can be made to an inpatient treatment program. The main objective is to provide counseling, harm reduction education and support to those returning from treatment programs. The counsellor will utilize all resources involved with addictions, such as Tribal Police, Social Workers, Health Care Workers, the community school and other professionals. The counsellor will be involved in work that will move from reactive to preventative programming.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to make accurate assessments of client’s need
- Ability to ensure confidentiality and security with work with clients and care of their records
- Ability to mobilize the community in working together to deal with substance abuse
- Ability to present Addiction Awareness & Prevention, Wellness materials to students in school setting
- Ability to develop a trusting relationship with clients and staff through open, honest communication and genuine caring for the client situation
- Preference for someone familiar with cultural and traditional healing/wellness methods
- Skilled in the use of various current computer applications and office equipment
- Excellent written communication, e.g. Letters, reports, proposals, applications, etc.
- Knowledge of the First Nation’s culture, customs and health issues. Willingness to undertake further training in the addictions field to keep current or upon our recommendation.
- Serve as a role model by practicing personal wellness plan.
- Screen and assess client’s needs and why they are seeking assistance and services
- Stimulate new programs for harm reduction, for example; support circles, Al-anon, A.A., N.A., sponsorships, etc.
- Collaborate and network with other departments and community organizations
- Document and maintain cases thoroughly in the confidential files.
- Write quarterly, annual reports and monthly newsletter articles.
- Provide one to one, family and group counseling whenever necessary and refer clients to other appropriate professionals.
- Provide programs and support for clients returning from treatment
- Develop and provide harm reduction information services (Literature, workshops, videos, internet)
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the counselling field with a good understanding of trauma informed care. Must possess an Addictions Counselling Certificate or Nechi Community Addictions Certificate, a master’s degree in counselling or the Nechi Advanced Counselor Certificate. Preferred skill areas are non-violent communication, conflict resolution/coaching, familiarity with probation processes and group facilitation. Valid driver’s license and own vehicle. Upon confirmation of employment a current criminal record check and driver’s abstract is required. Applications will only be considered from those eligible to work in Canada.
