Successful construction collaboration with Murphy Construction recognized by BCEDA
The Líl̓wat Nation is proud to announce that it has won a BC Economic Development Association (BCEDA) award for its collaboration with Pemberton-based Murphy Construction. The award, sponsored by Fortis BC was presented to Councillor Lhpatq Maxine Bruce in Kelowna on June 13, 2018.
“Receiving a BCEDA Community Project award is evidence of the success of Líl̓wat’s collaboration with Murphy Construction has been. Our relationship began in 2014 and is continuing to grow and strengthen,” said Kerry Mehaffey, CEO of the Líl̓wat Business Group.
Graham Murphy, CEO of Murphy Construction, agrees, adding, “It has been a great privilege to be involved in such a great partnership and see the rewards that are happening within the Mount Currie community. From a social, professional and personal level, it has been gratifying working towards Chief and Councils’ Guiding Principles by offering training, mentorship, construction management expertise, job creation, and building relationship through building projects.”
With the support of Murphy Construction, Líl̓wat has undertaken creating new multi-family housing units and community projects such as the new youth centre, revitalization of the community hockey rink, and Ts̓zil Learning Centre, a $7.2 1million post-secondary institution that will bring learning, training and culture together. Delivering on time and on budget, these collaborative projects have created new jobs for Líl̓wat Nation members, provided training, mentorship, and construction management expertise. Currently, Murphy Construction employs 26 Líl̓wat Nation members.
“It’s rewarding to know that together, not only are we creating jobs, we are building on-reserve homes that exceed the BC Building Code standards, and amenities that will serve the community for decades. And, most importantly, this collaboration is building capacity,” said Chief Dean Nelson.
