Enhancing the Local Education Agreement Poster: A Líl̓wat Perspective
This poster, created to inform students about the Local Education Agreement (LEA) between the Líl̓wat Nation and School District No. 48, was designed with a specific focus on cultural relevance and a student-centric approach. Our goal was to make the key principles of the LEA relatable and visually engaging for the Líl̓wat student body by intentionally incorporating Líl̓wat graphics and language.
Symbolism in Graphics and Language
The inclusion of specific imagery and Líl̓wat words is intentional; each element was carefully chosen to resonate with students and reflect the core tenets of the agreement.
- Salmon: The school of salmon depicted on the poster symbolizes núk̓w7an (to help someone). This imagery highlights the collective effort and mutual support that is central to the LEA. Just as salmon swim together to reach their destination, the poster conveys that the community, educators, and students are all working together to help each individual succeed.
- Inner Cedar Bark Hat: The woven hat represents kaxílhtuma (achievement). This powerful symbol of Líl̓wat heritage connects the idea of academic and personal success directly to cultural identity. It visually reinforces that “achievement” for Líl̓wat students is not just about grades or graduation, but about a holistic success that honors and is rooted in their culture.
- Your journey: The poster also includes the phrase ti sqwétspa7swa (your journey). This is a central theme, emphasizing that the LEA is dedicated to supporting each student’s personal educational journey
- Líl̓wat Language: The inclusion of Líl̓wat words such as núk̓w7an (to help someone), ti sqwétspa7swa (your journey), and kaxílhtuma (achievement) helps to make the poster more authentic and directly communicates the values of the agreement in a culturally significant way. It signals to students that their language and culture are not only acknowledged but are a central part of their educational journey
