Roof Snow Loads
The recent large snowfalls have had folks asking questions about snow loads on buildings. Our homes and buildings are designed to withstand these current conditions. However, if the building has not been built to modern standards or is old enough to be rotting, the structure may not withstand the loads. Observe structures for bowing or cracking which will show if the structure is close to failure.
Shoveling Your Roof
If you are inspecting or shoveling your roof, do so in a safe manner with fall protection and ensure the area below you are clear of people, pets, or anything that can be damaged. As the weather warms, snow may begin to slide off roofs. Please be aware of this as the weight of snow falling from a roof can be extremely heavy and dangerous.
Upcoming Above Zero Temperatures and Heavy Rains
Warm Temperatures, above zero, are expected over the coming days along with heavy rain for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Localized Flooding and Pooling Water
The BC River Forecast Centre is calling for rising river levels, but our two main rivers are expected to rise significantly. However, localize flooding or pooling of water can be expected given the frozen ground and the damming effect of snow. In other words, there may be no ability for the water to drain properly. If possible, create channels through the snow for the water to drain.
Sliding Snow off Roofs
Warm temperatures and rain may together act as a lubricant to dislodge snow from roofs. This is particularly hazardous for metal roofs with no snow stops. The risk will be of sliding snow onto less structurally sound roofs over decks or deck floors. Sliding snow may also fall on pathways or in front of doorways. It is important to recognize where these hazard areas may exist and avoid over the coming days.
