Xet̓ólacw Septic Tank
Rehabilitation Project

How does the Xet̓ólacw sewage system work?

Each house in Xet̓ólacw has its own septic tank that is connected to the community sewer system. The septic tank separates sewage from each house into solids and liquids. The solids settle into a sludge at the bottom of the tank and require pumping out every 3-5 years and the liquid portion on top overflows into a community sewer system that leads to a community drain field.

What are the issues?

Septic tanks require periodic pumping out of accumulated sludge (solids). If this is not done, eventually solids will start overflowing into the community system which was not designed to handle solids and will result in blockages and backups.

What is this project?

The Nation has developed a plan to locate, inspect and pump out every septic tank in Xet̓ólacw over the next 5 years. This year is Phase 1 and will focus on the oldest tanks which are located along Xet̓ólacw Road and Daisyview Drive. We will first locate the tank, pump it out and then inspect it. From the inspection, more work may be identified such as replacement of inlet and outlet pipping, installation of risers and lids and possible full replacement of septic tank if needed.

When will it happen?

Public Works will be starting this project Monday May 22nd, 2023. Each tank will require a minimum 3-4 hours work and more if repairs are identified during inspection. This is year 1 of a 5-year project.

What are the impacts?

Public Works will require access to the septic tank with both a backhoe and pumper truck. Residents will be notified if they must refrain from using the toilet or using running water while the crew is working on their tank. A landscaping crew will be following up and performing repairs to damaged lawns and yards afterwards.
